2009 Silent Range Estate Merlot
Glenrowan, Victoria
Friends who come to play tennis with the parents most weeks brought a bottle of wine this week and what a surprise it was. I didn't know the producer. I'm often disappointed by Merlot from Australia. I really didn't know what to expect. Happy to report, I was delighted by the wine in the glass.

Dark purple in colour with lifted violet aromas and blackcurrant pastille following through on the palate that is surprisingly savoury, with plump yet firm tannins and nicely balanced crisp acidity. This wine is a very easy drink, but absolutely not a lightweight - soft and supple and really approachable. A delicious match to a charcuterie platter and a salty, hard cheese, or pair it to a grilled steak with a creamy mushroom sauce.

Tim and Lisbeth Long, the newest generation of the custodians of Silent Range Estate should be delighted with this wine - mouthwateringly rich and tasty - and great value for money. Just exactly the thing to be quaffing on a cold winter's Wednesday night after a big game of tennis!
