2005 Watershed Senses Shiraz

Margaret River, Western Australia

Watershed Shiraz

It is not often that I come across a winery website that is so upfront about the investment opportunity it presents but do not be put off in any way.Watershed, based in the Margaret River, is a producer that focuses on making a range of interesting wines that represent good value from a region of such renown. The Senses Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier have both seen a little oak which gives them both a distinct delightful creaminess that complements their fresh pure varietal characters. The 2008 newly released Viognier has an incredibly spicy nose and is reminiscent of a creamy pear tart without the sugar hit. It has just enough acid to hold it.

The 2005 Senses Shiraz was released in 2008 and will develop for a few years yet, but has great character now. It’s nose is of savoury characters with some peppery plum fruit still showing with a toasty fine oak backbone. Hints of dried thyme and vanilla give it an extra lift. The warming character is pleasantly mirrored in the body and alcohol (14% ABV) of the wine. The flavours of chocolate, plums, and the same nutty toastiness from the nose dominate the palate. This wine will be one for those that enjoy something more than big fruit in a bottle.

Note: The word Senses does not appear on the label of the 2005 Shiraz.

Recommended Food and Wine Match: Beef with a slow cooked jus would match the savoury characters well.
