2007 Petersons Mudgee Shiraz
Mudgee, New South Wales

Petersons is a family run Hunter based winery with a reputation for producing consistent quality wines. This wine is just one of the growing range that are produced from the grapes grown in their Mudgee Glenesk vineyard where they grow 13 different varietals. The current range includes old favourites such as this Shiraz, a more deluxe version called the Old Block Shiraz, and a Cabernet Sauvignon through to a sublime Semillon, a chocolaty Petit Verdot and a velvety Sparkling Malbec.
2007 was a dry year in Mudgee and this wine certainly shows the characters of the vintage well – a concentrated low yield wine. The wine displays a lovely deep ruby colour with purple highlights and has a nose of ripe plum, blackberry and pepper. The grippy tannins are well matched by concentrated spicy berries, plums and aniseed flavours that linger on. After spending 12 months in new French and American oak it is well rounded and balanced and has just the right hint of warm vanilla.
While you can put this wine down for a few more years yet, it is one that is drinking well now. Many of Peterson’s wines are only available on-line or from cellar door, however, there are a few little gems such as this one available from selected fine wine stores.
Recommended Food and Wine Match: A versatile juicy style, that is a great match for steak with all the trimmings.
