Piggs Peake 2009 Sowvignon Blanc
Hunter Valley, New South Wales

It is not often that you come across a locally sourced Sauvignon Blanc from the Hunter Valley. But then this is also not quite the pungent herbaceous tropical fruit bomb style that has become synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc either. You only have to look at the label to realise that there is a very cheeky side to the Piggs Peake team. Plus the fact that amongst their wide range of wines, they make a nicely textured Lambusco style wine called ‘Pigbrusco’ and a very interesting dessert style Zinfandel called ‘Suckling Pig Zinfandel’.
The wine has been made and aged on French oak with careful lees contact giving it a very creamy and silky texture. This is also evident in the creamy notes highlighting the aromas of tropical fruit, grapefruit with some ripe pear and straw. However, the flavours are of fresher white peach, grapefruit and pineapple with a minerally edge.
The winemaker maintains that this wine can age up to 6 years and I think that it could do just that. I had the opportunity to taste the 2007 vintage last year and at 2 years old it had started to develop some honey and nut characters which really suited the more typical fruit flavours and aromas that were still fresh.
This wine would work really well with some creamy seared scallops or Barramundi sprinkled with roasted nuts.
