All Saints Estate, located just down the road from the epicentre of Australian fortifieds and massive reds, Rutherglen, is a winery that defies local expectations. Yes it’s the winery with the castle – great for weddings – and yes they do make fortifieds as well as big juicy Durifs, but as well, they are focussing on some very elegant table wines, not so strongly associated with the area.

Pierre, produced and named for the late Peter Brown, is an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend. Made using traditional Bordeaux techniques, this wine is bright ruby in colour, with a vibrant nose of redcurrants, violets and smoky oak. On the palate, the red berry fruit, floral notes and oak spice mingle with fresh acidity and fine tannins. A big wine that is long and luscious, yet elegantly structured – great with a wintery beef stew or steak and chips now, or age it for a few years for more savoury elegance with a roast beef dinner.

Ps: the bottle is also sealed with a ‘vino-lock’ glass stopper – slightly tricky to get out, but quite elegant and also a talking point!
