Morris Cellar Reserve Muscat

Rutherglen

Morris Cellar

Many people make the mistake of thinking that sweet fortifieds are winter drinking only, but this could not be further from the truth. Be it a beautiful Muscat from Rutherglen or a luscious PX from Jerez, Spain, sweet fortifieds should not simply be relegated to Christmas Day with the pudding, Stilton and walnuts although this is one perfect place to find it.

There are some rebellious souls who are not afraid to add an iceblock or pour over vanilla icecream as the weather heats up, which can be pretty good, but to experience the full power and delights of these wines without dilution, why not consider serving them straight from the freezer?

I do and I can vouch for the fact that with the sugar and alcohol levels involved, they do not solidify when frozen. Rather, they become more unctuous in texture, which makes for delightful sipping on a hot summer night. As the ambient evening temperature warms the wine slowly, you will see the aromas and flavours changing and blossoming in the most delightful way!

The Morris Cellar Reserve Muscat is a particularly fine example of this style of wine. Deep tawny garnet in colour, the nose is complex and rich, with notes of walnut, toffee, coffee, dark chocolate and spice.

On the palate, the intense sweetness and alcohol are balanced by firm acidity and complex flavours reminiscent of candied orange and lemon peel dipped in bitter dark chocolate, nuts and caramel coffee. Rich, deep and long, this wine is an absolute bargain and is the perfect after dinner tipple any time of the year. Happy holidays!
