It is not often that the new Jimmy Watson winner would emerge in this column, but that is exactly what this wine is.  It is not yet released, but I imagine when it is, it will come and go before we can blink twice, so, if you like excellent cool climate Shiraz, make sure you get your hands on some.  Yes, cool climate.  This Shiraz is from Tasmania, made by Nick Glaetzer in honour of his father.  It is the antithesis of the wines Colin and Ben make in the Barossa in style, but right up there in terms of quality.

The deep crimson colour of the wine is thanks partially to the co-fermentation of some parcels with Pinot Gris – a variation of the Rhone practice of co-fermenting Viognier with Shiraz, this fixes both colour and tannins as well as adding some subtle aromatics.  The aroma is of juicy red plums, white pepper and savoury notes reminiscent of autumn leafs and spicy oak.  On the palate the wine is juicy but savoury with a velvety texture and great balance and length, making this a delight to drink now, yet promising aging ability well into the future.

A huge delight to see a Tasmanian Shiraz winning the Jimmy Watson in 2011, especially as it is just such a delicious drink!
