Tyrrells Vat 9 Shiraz 2007

Hunter Valley, New South Wales

Tyrrells

Tyrrells today is a huge wine company that produces such a wide range of wines that your head will spin from the choice and variety.

The iconic nature of this fourth-generation, family-run Hunter Valley wine business is best represented by the Winemaker’s Selection Private Bin wines – the classification of the estate’s highest quality, single vineyard wines, instigated by Murray Tyrrell in the 1950’s.

The Chardonnay and Semillon are both terrific, but as the evenings get frosty the palate craves the rich, deep flavours of classic Hunter Shiraz.

Tyrrells offers two – the Vat 8 and the Vat 9.  The Vat 8 is described as a ‘more modern style’ and offers soft, sweet blackberry and dark chocolate aromatics and flavours; but for my money, the more savoury, restrained and classy Vat 9 wins hands down.

Deep ruby in colour with a rich ripe nose of savoury plum sauce, grilled meat and peppery spice.  Cool, spicy and red fruited on the palate, with firm acid and tannin balance.  A lovely long, savoury finish that demands a quality char grilled steak with roast vegetables and Dijon mustard.

A special treat wine, so spoil yourself!
