2010 Angullong Bull's Roar Tempranillo

Originally from Spain, Tempranillo is one of the newer grape varieties that are capturing our attention by producing sleek food friendly wines. This Spaniard is most welcome providing a stylishly brooding alternative to our bigger, more boisterous Aussie reds.
Tempranillo is but one of the 'alternative varietals' in Angullong's vineyard or perhaps I should say .... stud. This wine has quite a story to tell starting with the fact that the 2010 is Angullong's very first Tempranillo vintage and has gone on to become a multi trophy and gold medal winner already. Not bad indeed considering that two years before being grafted with Tempranillo, there was Marsanne growing in that vineyard.
Ripe raspberry and cherry fruit with a spicy charcuterie edge is wrapped in succulent tannins. With its medium body and alcohol it is not so much the rampaging bull, but more of an elegantly clad matador - without the finishing sting of course. Made in an early drinking style, you can even drink it at lunch without needing a siesta.
