Grapevines

Australian vignerons have access to a wide range of grapevines.

Nurseries growing grapevines usually supply a range of varieties and clones usually as rootstock, Vinifera rootlings or grafted vines. Grafted vines can be bench or field grafted, potted or dormant.

Other grapevine characteristics are Phylloxera resistant and root-knot nematode resistant rootstocks as well as fungus resistant rootstock.

Grapevine varieties available include, cool, warm, and hot varieties, and grapevines of defined national origins such as Italian varieties. The CSIRO also develops varieties such as Sienna.

The grapevine nursery industry has an accreditation system administered by the Australian Vine Improvement Association (AVIA). Grapevine nurseries accredited under the National Vine Accreditation Scheme are eligible to display the AVIA logo on their web sites.

Grapevine nurseries are also able to buy plant material through various grapevine improvement organisations which are in every wine producing state. Other factors include grapevines being sourced from proclaimed vine protection areas.

Plant Movement Certificates are necessary if transporting grapevines between states. These certificates are usually arranged by the nursery.

The Vine Industry Nursery Association (VINA) is the grapevine industry’s peak body.
