2010 Giant Steps Gladysdale Pinot Noir

Yarra Valley, Victoria

Giant Steps has done for Healesville what Little Creatures did for Freemantle, but more so, by adding wine into the mix. The cellar door complex in the centre of the Yarra Valley is a temple to yeast - not only showcasing the wines, but also baking terrific bread, pizza and other dough-ey treats, while beer is brewed just next door. Oh yes, and they roast their own coffee which is terrific and which fuels the whole operation! Well worth a visit!

But what of the wines? Well there is a large range to select from, covering just about every price point and variety, and I love their Chardonnays and Pinots Noir. Of the three single vineyard Pinots Noir tasted on a recent visit, the Gladysdale stood out as a personal favourite. Bright ruby garnet with a beautifully perfumed nose comprising red rose petals, ripe strawberries, a touch of red currant and lifted spice. The aromas and flavours develop into darker notes - particularly morello cherries - as it breathes and the wine is sweet fruited but not cloying. The palate continues savory with firm, tangy raspberry-like acidity and silky, firm tannins. A wine of great elegance and complexity, with very good length - everything you could desire from a top echelon Yarra Valley Pinot Noir.
